A record auction for Michael Schumacher’s car

A record auction for Michael Schumacher’s car

After the record reached by a painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the autumn auctions registered another surprise: a Ferrari car that was piloted by the German Michael Schumacher was sold for 7.5 million dollars, a record for a modern Formula 1.

Sotheby’s had nothing to rival this season with the “Salvator Mundi” auctioned for $ 450 million on Wednesday by rival Christie’s in New York.

But Sotheby’s was still able to innovate in its gala devoted to contemporary art with this Formula 1 that won the Monaco Grand Prix in 2001, and which it had described as “the most amazing race car ever put up for auction.”

The price tag for the car of the seven-time Formula 1 world champion, seriously injured in a ski accident in 2013, far exceeded initial estimates of between $ 4 million and $ 5 million.

“This is not a work of art”, a Sotheby’s official, Grégoire Billault, had acknowledged before the sale, but “we have all grown up with cars, we dream of cars, and I thought it would be nice to give a little wink” at this auction. AFP
