Albert Pujols to the Los Angeles Dodgers

Albert Pujols to the Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers have signed a major league deal with veteran player Albert Pujols, a person with knowledge of the deal said Saturday.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the pact is unlikely to become official until Monday.

The Los Angeles Times was the first newspaper to report on the agreement.

Pujols, 41, left the Los Angeles Angels earlier this month after spending nearly 10 seasons with that team, the Dodgers’ metropolitan rival.

The Dominican, who is the oldest player in the majors, hit just .198 this season with five homers and 12 RBIs for the Angels.

Pujols was in the final season of a 10-year, $ 240 million contract with the Angels, who did not win a single playoff game during their tenure.

The slugger will earn $ 30 million this season, and the Dodgers would pay him only the prorated portion of the major league minimum wage for the remainder of the season, or about $ 420,000.

The rest of the salary would be covered by the Angels.

Pujols ranks fifth among the best home runners in history, with 667 homers. He is 13th on the hit list, with 3,253.

However, he made little impact on the Angels’ attack over the past five years. The Angels reported that Pujols asked to leave Anaheim because he did not want to be a substitute.

Thus he preferred to play daily with another team.

But there wouldn’t be much of a chance that Pujols, a three-time National League MVP, would play every day for the Dodgers, the champions of the last World Series, who count on Max Muncy as their starting first baseman.

The Dodgers also have in their ranks Cody Bellinger, once awarded the Most Valuable Player on the Old Circuit. Bellinger has been out with injury since the first series of the season.

Pujols, 10 times selected to the All-Star Game, would return to the National, where he could only help as a designated hitter in interleague road games.

However, Muncy can play other positions in the box. And Pujols, who is hitting right-hander, could solve some of the problems the Dodgers have seen against left-handed pitchers this season.

The Dodgers have a 663 OPS against lefties on the season, much lower than their record against righties.

Pujols would be the fourth member of the Dodgers roster to have an MVP award on his résumé, joining Bellinger, Mookie Betts and Clayton Kerwhaw. The team also has three pitchers who have ever won the Cy Young: Kershaw, Trevor Bauer and David Price.

For all their talents, the Dodgers have suffered from multiple injuries early in the season. Pujols could provide help while the absentees regain shape. (GG) (AP)
