Alfa Romeo returns to Formula 1 with Sauber

Italian brand Alfa Romeo returns to the premier class next season after signing “a commercial and technical collaboration agreement” with the Sauber F1 team, the Swiss team announced on Wednesday.

“This agreement is a significant step in the reshaping of Alfa Romeo, a legendary brand that has helped make the history of the sport. The brand will also benefit from the exchange of technology and strategic knowledge with a partner with undisputed experience, ”explained Sergio Marchionne, CEO of the Fiat group.

Starting in 2018, the team will be known as the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team and will carry Ferrari engines. In addition, the logo of the Italian brand can be seen on the car and on the drivers’ overalls.

For his part, the general manager of the Sauber F1 team, Pascal Picci, was “very proud” that “an internationally renowned company” has decided to work with them on their return to Formula 1.

«Alfa Romero has a long history of success at the grand prix. We are confident that together we can achieve great success for the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team and we look forward to a long and successful partnership, ”he added.

The first two Formula 1 championships, held in 1950 and 1951, were won by two drivers at the wheel of Alfa Romeo cars, Nino Farina and Juan Manuel Fangio. In his second period, he was a supplier of engines for 18 years and in the following, from 1979 to 1985, he competed as a constructor, obtaining a sixth place as the best result in the constructors’ championship.
