Alonso and McLaren will continue together

The difficult bond between Fernando Alonso and McLaren will continue for at least one more year. This was confirmed today by both the team and the Spanish driver, who hopes that the arrival of Renault as an engine supplier can lead the team to fight to “win races and world championships in Formula 1.”

Despite countless setbacks over the past three seasons, the two-time world champion once again renewed his confidence in the British team.

Central to this is the recently signed agreement with Renault, which will replace Honda as McLaren’s engine supplier. It is not a minor fact that Renault was the team that accompanied Alonso in his titles in Formula 1 in 2005 and 2006.

Neither party provided details on the duration of the bond. According to Spanish media, the contract will be in principle for one year, but may be extended annually if the pilot has the car he needs. In any case, the 36-year-old Spaniard’s partner in 2018 will continue to be Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne.

“It is great to be able to extend my relationship with the entire McLaren team. My heart has always told me to stay and feel at home here, “said Alonso in a statement released by McLaren ahead of the United States Grand Prix.

“It is a wonderful team, full of incredible people, with a human warmth and a warmth that I have never experienced elsewhere in Formula 1. I am very happy to drive here,” he added.

Alonso is contesting his third consecutive season at McLaren, the team he raced for in 2007 when he was allied with Mercedes. But, like the previous two, the car is far from competitive.
