An amateur boxer identified as Luis Guerrero Martínez, 24, died in Costa Rica after receiving a blow during training, the Red Cross reported today.
The events occurred last night in the gymnasium of the Sports Committee in the town of Escazú, in the western sector of San José, where the fighter was training with a 16-year-old partner.
During training, the minor hit him at the level of the liver, which caused Guerrero to collapse in the ring, the coach of both boxers, Dominican Joe Hammer, told the media.
A spokeswoman for the Red Cross told Efe on Tuesday that rescuers arrived at the scene to treat the boxer, but after several minutes of applying resuscitation maneuvers, he was declared deceased at the site.
The official causes of the boxer’s death have not yet been determined. EFE
