Indian Mary Kom has become the boxer with the most titles in the history of the amateur world championships, obtaining her sixth gold medal in front of her audience in New Delhi this Saturday.
Kom, 35, defeated Ukrainian Hanna Okhota (5-0) in the 48kg category in the final, allowing her to overtake Irish Katie Taylor (5 world titles) in the record.
Kom also equaled the boxer with the most titles, Cuban Félix Savón, a six-time champion.
“Thank you for your love and support, I look forward to qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics in 2020,” the Indian told her audience.
Kom, who has three children, won a silver medal at the 2001 World Cups before chaining five titles in a row, the last one in Barbados in 2010. At the London-2012 Games he took a bronze. AFP
