Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo, NBA regular season MVP, confirmed that he will participate with Greece in the World Cup (August 31-September 15 in China).
“I want to be there to help my country do something important,” said the player known as ‘The Greek Freak’.
«I have not spoken with the coach to know in what position I am going to play. Whether he plays as one or five (point guard or center) I don’t care. I want to play, I am a basketball player, “added the 24-year-old.
Antekounmpo, who has played 38 games for the Greek national team, is the son of Nigerian immigrants.
Three days ago he became the second European player after German Dirk Nowitzki (Dallas-2007) to receive the prestigious MVP trophy.
In the NBA since 2013, Antetokounmpo finished the regular season with an average of 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, the best statistics of his career.
In the first round of the World Cup in China, Greece will compete with Brazil, New Zealand and Montenegro, in group F of the competition. AFP
