Argentine Méndez, Maradona’s former assistant, will coach Tijuana

Argentine Sebastián Méndez, assistant to Diego Armando Maradona at Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata in his country, was appointed as the new Tijuana soccer coach.

«Sebastián Méndez is the new leader of the Pack. Welcome, ‘Gallego’! ”, The border team boasted on its social networks to its new strategist for the Apertura 2021 tournament.

Méndez, who took charge of Gymnastics and Fencing after the health problems that ended Maradona’s life in November 2020, will replace Uruguayan Robert Dante Siboldi in the technical direction of the Xolos.

The ‘Gallego’ comes from directing the Argentine Godoy Cruz in his second stage, whom he commanded from January to August of this year in 23 games, of which he won eight, tied four and lost 11.

Before that, Méndez was the helmsman of the Colombian Cúcuta Deportivo, the Chilean Palestino and the Argentines Belgrano, Atlético Platense, Atlanta and Banfield.

Sebastián Méndez will have the task of recovering a Tijuana that is in the last position of the Apertura standings with seven points and a mark of one win, four draws and seven losses.

“After seeing matches we conclude that it is a team that should not be in the position it is in, it should have more points because it has the squad for it,” said Méndez in his presentation.

Besides being the worst team in the table, Tijuana is the team with the most goals conceded with 21 and the fourth worst offense with nine scored goals in 12 games.

«I accepted to come to Mexican soccer because it is a good place, here the game is good. In addition, the managers have been honest in their talks and if one sees the team at the table there will be fears or doubts, but we are convinced that there is a good staff to get out of the situation ”, stressed the 44-year-old mentor.

In Tijuana, Méndez must draw potential from the South American figures led by the Colombian Mauro Manotas, the Ecuadorian Fidel Martínez and the Argentine Lucas Rodríguez, who did not perform with Siboldi.

The debut of the ‘Gallego’ will be on October 14 when Tijuana visits Querétaro on the thirteenth day of the Apertura. EFE (HN)
