The Association of Professional Tennis Players (ATP) announced on Tuesday that it is investigating the complaint about an alleged racist comment by American Ryan Harrison against his compatriot Donald Young, whom he defeated this Monday in the New York tournament.
In a statement by an ATP spokesperson it was reported that they will make a “further review of all video and audio recordings of the match as this matter is further investigated”
“The ATP considers the allegations of racial prejudice extremely serious,” he said in a statement in which he clarifies that no further comments will be made until after the investigation is concluded.
After the first round match in which Harrison, the sixth seed, beat Young 6-3, 7-6 (4), the latter said on his Twitter account that he was impressed and surprised after listening to his compatriot tell him in the middle of the shock how he felt, regarding him, as a black player.
“I thought this was an inclusive men’s sport,” Young lamented.
His partner was quick to respond in the same way, calling Young’s accusations “absolutely false.”
“I am extremely disappointed that anyone could say that in reaction to losing a match of tennisHarrison pointed out.
The tennis player pointed out that any audio or video would free him up “one hundred percent” and invited anyone who has a resource available to find something.
The controversial match was played in the first round of the tennis that takes place in Long Island (New York) and that will end this Sunday. EFE
