Bam Adebayo renews with Miami Heat

Bam Adebayo came to the NBA with the goal of providing sustenance for his mother and changing her life. His first contract took care of that.

And judging by the player’s own opinion, his next deal will give his family peace of mind for generations.

Adebayo and the Miami Heat have agreed to a five-year, $ 163 million contract extension, the team and agent Alex Saratsis said Tuesday. The contract has not been signed and will not be official until Adebayo completes a physical exam, which will possibly occur in the next few days.

It will be the most expensive contract in terms of value in the history of the Heat.

“This is an achievement that I always wanted,” Adebayo said. “Just the fact of being able to achieve this goal and make a generational change in my family and be able to take care of those around me, is something important.”

The power forward will earn 5.1 million this season, the last year of his rookie contract. His extension will begin later, with a starting salary of around 28.1 million in the 2021-22 campaign. If he is selected to an “All-NBA” team next season, after this year is close, his annual salary would increase.

“It is another challenge that I am willing to take on,” said the player. “I am willing to help the team win. If my individual achievements help, I’m in. “

The Heat had until December 21 to agree to an extension with Adebayo this season. Otherwise I would have had to wait until next summer. Miami had indicated that the team’s goal was to give Adebayo a new contract, but the question was when. If they waited until the following summer, the Heat would have had more salary flexibility.

Adebayo is coming off the best season of his career. He was selected to the All-Star Game for the first time and won that weekend’s skills competition. His block preserved the victory on a dunk attempt by Jayson Tatum in the final seconds of the opener against Boston in the Eastern Conference final series and he was named the best defensive team of the year.

“I want to go out and do something special around the city,” Adebayo said during a Thanksgiving event Tuesday where he handed out turkeys to families.

When the contract is ready, Adebayo will become the fourth player in the 2017 draft to secure a maximum extension, alongside De’Aaron Fox (Sacramento), Donovan Mitchell (Utah) and Tatum.

Adebayo averaged 15.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.1 assists this season. The only other player with those numbers in the league – two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, with whom Adebayo shares an agent. No Heat player has ever finished with those averages in all three categories.

“They are going to pressure you no matter what, it doesn’t matter if you have 160 million or 1.5 million. They treat us all the same and that is what I love about this organization, ”he said.

His first plan: to buy a house for his mother, wherever he wants.

“Knowing that it is made for the rest of its life takes a burden off me.” (GG) (Infobae)
