US hedge fund manager Steven Cohen has agreed to buy 95 percent of the New York Mets from Major League Baseball for $ 2.47 billion.
Cohen has reached a purchase agreement with the Fred Wilpon and Saul Katz families.
“I’m excited to have reached an agreement with the Wilpon and Katz families to buy the New York Mets,” Cohen, 64, said Monday.
Katz is the president of the franchise and Wilpon holds the title of managing partner.
Cohen, an investment mogul with a fortune valued at more than $ 14 billion, is considered one of the richest men in America.
The other owners of the Major League Baseball franchises will have to vote on whether to approve the deal.
Approval of the property could come in November and is dependent on at least 23 of the current 30 owners signing the agreement. AFP (HN).
