Bottas achieves his first victory in Formula One in Russia
Finnish Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) achieved his first victory as a Formula One driver on Sunday by beating German Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen, both from Ferrari, in the Russian Grand Prix, the fourth round of the World Championship.
With a brilliant start, Bottas allowed himself to progress from third to first place. In that privileged position he closed the race, signing not only his first victory with Mercedes but also his first victory since his debut in Formula One, in 2013.
“The wait has been worth it,” he acknowledged on the radio after savoring success in his fourth race at the wheel of a silver arrow, the 81st in his history.
As Williams’ starting driver, Valtteri Bottas could not step on the top box but on his twelfth podium – his third with Mercedes – he did earn first place.
He did it ahead of the two drivers who commanded for the rest of the weekend, from the first free practice to the qualifying session. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen succumbed to Valtteri Bottas.
The British Lewis Hamilton, who finished fourth in the Sochi Grand Prix, did not present a battle for victory.
Spaniard Carlos Sainz (Toro Rosso) was tenth while his compatriot Fernando Alonso (McLaren) did not compete due to a mechanical problem during the formation lap.
Mexican Sergio Pérez (Force India) concluded his participation at the Sochi Autodrome in sixth position. EFE
