Boxer Ricardo Mayorga wants to be mayor of Managua
Controversial fighter Ricardo Mayorga, former world champion of boxing, said today that he is interested in being mayor of Managua, the capital of Nicaragua, just as the late boxer Alexis Argüello did.
“I have always wanted to be mayor of Managua,” Mayorga told reporters.
Nicaragua’s next municipal elections are scheduled for the end of this year, and so far no political party has announced potential candidates.
Mayorga, 43, was interested in running as a candidate for the ruling Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), like Argüello in the 2008 municipal elections.
The boxer was confident in this possibility, claiming that he has talks in advance with the leader of the FSLN, the country’s president, Daniel Ortega.
“The president touched me the other time,” said Mayorga.
The boxer, who will fight next April 1 against the Mexican Jaudiel Zepeda, was world champion of boxing at 147 and 154 lbs.
At the peak of his career he faced the best of boxing worldwide, such as Félix ‘Tito’ Trinidad, Oscar de la Hoya, Vernon Forrest, Fernando Vargas and Shane Mosley.
Argüello, the greatest athlete from Nicaragua and one of the best in the history of the boxing In the world, he was vice mayor of Managua between 2005 and 2008, and then he was elected mayor, a position he held for six months because he committed suicide, according to the version of the National Police, something that his friends and family never accepted.
