After winning the featherweight title of the World Boxing Organization at 126 pounds (57 kilos), Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano now has the opportunity to become, together with Miguel Cotto, the only Puerto Rican to be champion in four different divisions.
Serrano (27-1-1, 20 KO) was crowned world champion last night – for the third time in her career – by defeating Canadian Olivia Gerula by TKO in the first round in New York.
“I worked hard for this fight and these are the results of the sacrifice that is made in this sport to look good,” Serrano said after the fight, in a press release released today.
Serrano added that he wishes his next fight would be against the champion of the featherweight division of the International Boxing Federation (IBF), the American Jennifer Han, or the winner of the fight between the champion of the World Boxing Association and the World Council of Boxing, the Argentine Soledad Matthysse, and the Canadian Jelena Mrdjenovich.
“After that, I am going to campaign at 122 pounds (55 kilos) to match Miguel Cotto’s feat, being world champion in four divisions and with God’s favor it will be,” emphasized the Puerto Rican athlete.
The first time Serrano was crowned champion was on September 10, 2011, when she knocked out Kimberly Connor in the first round and won the IBF 130-pound (59-kilogram) title.
Serrano’s second championship was achieved on August 15, 2014, when she defeated Argentina’s Maria ‘Tily’ Maderna and took the lead in the WBO lightweight or 135-pound division. EFEUSA
