The Brazilian socialist deputy Julio Delgado announced this Monday that he will file a lawsuit before the Supreme Court of the South American giant to prohibit the holding of the Copa América in that country, shortly after the South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced the country as a new campus.
“The numbers of the pandemic and the bans on events do not allow President Jair Bolsonaro, deliberately, to decide that a cup of that importance, with teams from 10 countries, be held here,” declared Delgado, of the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB) , to the political information portal O Antagonista.
Delgado affirmed that, with almost 462,000 deaths from covid-19 and the pandemic still out of control in the country, Brazil “cannot” host the continental football event, which was to be held first jointly by Argentina and Colombia, countries which finally renounced their status as venues.
