American brothers Mike and Bob Bryan, current Olympic doubles champions, announced this Saturday their resignation from the Rio de Janeiro Games to “preserve the health” of their families in the face of the threat of the Zika virus.
The Bryan brothers will not defend their title for a reason that other tennis players such as Milos Raonic, Feliciano López, Simona Halep, Tomas Berdych or Karolina Pliskova also declined to attend the Rio de Janeiro event.
“After hours and hours of reflection, Mike and I decided not to go to Rio. We would have liked to play the Olympics. But, as husbands and fathers, the health of our families is our priority. Representing the United States is one of the most important moments and winning the title in 2012 will always be the peak of our career, “they wrote on their Facebook account.
In this way, the Olympic Games will not be able to count on two tennis players who were number one in the world in doubles and who have won, in addition to the gold medal in London, sixteen Grand Slam titles.
