Boxing is not just one, around the world there are variants, Burma being perhaps the most violent of these. Also called “lethwei”, this sport is contested in two categories, more than 75 kilos, or less. It dates back to 2,300 years ago, and in the 3rd century monks used it to defend themselves.
It is characterized by being so ruthless that it is not uncommon for one of the two opponents to die in combat. Before starting the fight, a dance is danced, in which the opponents instigate brutality. What matters is the ability to endure pain and anger.
With the exception of blows to the eyes or noble parts, all blows are allowed, especially kicks; bites are also worth it. Whoever knocks down their opponent wins.
The protagonists wear boxing shorts, bandaged hands, a protective shell for the genitals, and a mouth guard. The fight takes place in a ring measuring 5.8 by 5.5 meters.
One of the most established training forums in Burmese boxing is “The Green Cobra”, located in Rangoon, which until five years ago was the capital of that country. (Courtesy of Unotv.com).
