The future of Uruguayan defender Diego Godín at Cagliari, the Italian Serie A club, is up in the air after the sports director of the Sardinian team, Stefano Capozzucca, acknowledged this Friday that the property can no longer afford to pay the more than three million euros net per year of your salary.
“Before carrying out market operations we need to fix Godín’s situation, we can no longer afford his salary. It is too high, “said Capozzucca in an appearance before the local media.
Godín, a former Atlético Madrid defender, has a contract in force with Cagliari until 2023, but the club, touched by the pandemic, recognizes that it no longer has the economic power to pay him.
The “Pharaoh”, whose net salary is around three million euros, had chosen Cagliari last year after a season at Inter Milan.
It was a sporting decision, but also a family one, since her partner, Sofía, is the daughter of Pepe Herrera, one of the great symbols of “Uruguayan” Cagliari of the 90s.
«I chose Cagliari because it is a team that I like, as you all know, my wife was born here and my father-in-law (José Herrera) played here for many years. He spoke highly of the club to me, it is a growing team, with young players who want to grow and who need people with experience to do so, “Godín said last year at his presentation press conference.
“Cagliari has given me confidence and has given me everything I wanted to come here,” he added then.
The club and Godín must now meet to manage the situation and seek solutions, with the possibility of closing a new agreement with lower amounts.
This season, the 35-year-old Uruguayan played 28 games and scored one goal. His leadership was decisive in the last stretch of the campaign to help the team get out of the relegation zone and protect its permanence in Serie A. EFE (HN)
