Canelo Álvarez: «Bivol is a great champion, but it is my moment»

The Mexican Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez praised this Thursday the category of his next rival, the Russian Dmitry Bivol, but he was confident in snatching the WBA middle heavyweight champion belt from him and continuing to enlarge his legacy in boxing.

Bivol “is a great champion, a great fighter. We know but we have prepared for him, “said Álvarez at a press conference prior to Saturday’s fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (Nevada).

“He has a lot of skills, a lot of amateur experience, he is a solid champion at 175 (pounds – 79.4kg) but I know it and I am ready. I am very confident in how strong I am, “said ‘Canelo’.

At 31 years old, the boxer from Guadalajara feels in the best moment of his career. Since last year he has been the undisputed super middleweight champion (168 pounds – 76.2kg) and now he feels capable of beating a champion from a higher division.

“I feel alive when I have these challenges. I respect the skills of Dmitry Bivol but it’s my time, I feel better than ever », he assured. “I want to make history and those challenges are what will put me in the boxing history books.”

«I have beaten all the champions in 168. Now I have to take other challenges. I do it for myself, not only to make history but because I need to feel those kinds of challenges, “said the Mexican, who answered the questions holding his little daughter on his lap.

The boxer also hopes to enjoy great support from his compatriots in Las Vegas for this fight, scheduled as part of the Mexican celebrations on May 5.

On his turn, Bivol welcomed the opportunity to face the Mexican, one of the best and most popular pound-for-pound fighters, but also expressed confidence in his chances to pull off a big upset on Saturday.

“I am very happy to have this opportunity. I have asked my team for years to compete against the best, “recalled the Russian. “It’s been a long journey to this point and now I have to do my job.”

«Every time I go into the ring I believe in my victory. If you don’t believe it you will never win. I’ve been in boxing since I was five years old. At 16 I was already twice world amateur champion. Now I have a belt and I am a champion. Why am I not going to win?” asked Bivol.

«Of course I respect him, he is a great champion. He is much more challenging for me, not only to keep the belt but also to check my skills against a great fighter », he remarked.

At 31 years old, the Russian has an immaculate record of 19 wins (11 knockouts) and no losses and has successfully defended the World Boxing Association (WBA) title since 2016. (AFP)
