«Canelo» Alvarez will not accept WBC title if he defeats Kazakh Golovkin

Mexican Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez announced that he will not accept Gennady Golovkin’s World Boxing Council (WBC) middleweight title if he defeats the Kazakh in their highly anticipated fight on September 16 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I am very happy to fight for two important titles,” said Alvarez. “It’s going to be the best fight of the year.”

Golovkín’s promoter reacted by assuring that the Kazakh would put his three titles at stake.

“GGG (his nickname) is proud to bring all three of his belts back into the game,” said Tom Loeffler.

Álvarez’s entourage explained that the Mexican will vacate the WBC title if he wins.

The boxer has had difficult relationships with the WBC for several years and did not like having to give up the WBC middleweight title he held between 2015 and 2016 at the request of the Council in order to fight Golovkin.

Alvarez, 27, nicknamed “Canelo” in reference to his red hair, has won 49 wins, including 34 before the limit, by a loss and a draw.

For his part, the 35-year-old Golovkin remains undefeated since his professional debut with 37 wins, including 33 by knockouts. AFP
