City to erect statues of Silva, Agüero and Kompany at the Etihad

Manchester City will erect a statue outside the Etihad Stadium to the Spaniard David Silva, the Argentine Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero and the Belgian Vicent Kompany for “their incomparable contribution to the club and its transformation over a total of thirteen years.” announced the English club through its website.

Silva, Agüero and Kompany, considered as historical figures within the English club, will be honored with a statue for each of them that will be located near the ‘cityzens’ stadium. City confirmed that Scottish sculptor Andy Scott (Glasgow, 1964) will be in charge of shaping them.

Manchester club president Khaldoon Al Mubarak announced this project in 2019 following the departure of Kompany, the most successful captain in the club’s history. In the same way, he assured that “work is being done so that soon the historical legends of the club are properly recognized.”

“After all, Vincent and David don’t need statues to recognize their achievements with Manchester City over the last decade. They are already icons of their generation, ”Al Mubarak declared.

“But these works of art give us and future generations the opportunity to remember and savor truly magical moments created by the two of them,” added the president.

The sculptures of Silva and Kompany are already finished and will be presented this Saturday, August 28, before the start of the match between City and Arsenal. The process of building the statues began in 2020 but due to the pandemic, the sculptor and the footballers were only able to communicate virtually.

“Reflecting all these elements is always a challenge, but in particular, with the global pandemic, we have only been able to see Vincent and David virtually. But through their perceptions and after extensive study in video and images, I have tried to capture their unique physical peculiarities and distinctive movements in a way that I hope does justice to these phenomenal footballers, ”declared the sculptor.

Scott will also be in charge of shaping the statue – scheduled for 2022 – of ‘Kun’, the club’s historical top scorer with 260 goals and the protagonist in the victory over QPR that gave City its third league title -first Premier League (2012) -, after 44 years, by scoring the decisive goal at the last moment of the last day.
