Costa Rican Gabriel retains WBO and WBA super welterweight titles
The Costa Rican boxer Hanna Gabriel retained this Saturday the super welterweight titles (154 pounds) of the World Organization of Boxing (OMB) and the World Association of Boxing (WBA) by defeating Canadian Natasha Spence by unanimous decision.
It was a 10-round pitched battle won by Hanna “the Amazon” Gabriel, 34, unanimously by the same score on the three judges’ scorecards from 99 to 91, against Spence who endured all kinds of punishment with nobility.
La tica raises her professional record to 17 won fights (11 by KO), one loss and one draw, while Canadian Spence remains in eight wins (6 by KO), three losses and a draw.
“I never thought that I would have so much affection after two years of not fighting in Costa Rica, thank you very much for being at the foot of the cannon with me and I hope to give you many more good fights,” Gabriel declared after the fight.
The first two rounds were a you-to-power from power to power, with both female fighters landing accurate blows that left visible physical sequelae on the cheekbones of both of them.
From the third episode the Costa Rican began to demonstrate her superiority with numerous combinations to the face of Spence, who only managed to throw disorderly blows and lower his head excessively to avoid further punishment.
With the powerful hands of “the Amazon” thrusting into Spence’s face at will, the fight slowly inched toward the ethical corner.
“The nightmare” Spence, shorter and shorter, tried to counterattack with her right, but she felt more and more the power of the local’s fists, against which she defended herself with hugs and was saved by the bell in at least a couple of occasions.
Gabriel brought out all his repertoire in the seventh round and left the Canadian very beaten with his combinations of “1-2”, the left hook and a couple of right uppercuts.
She tried to surprise Spence, desperate to improve the points, but she finished the eighth inning visibly tired and even slightly dizzy.
The judge of the match, the Puerto Rican Melba Santos, had to intervene a lot in the last three rounds due to the Canadian’s hugs.
The last minute of the fight was a real train wreck, with a Costa Rican who threw everything in search of the knockout, but she did it because Spence gave a demonstration of how to withstand blows without falling to the canvas. EFE
