Cuba wants to regain the reign in Qatar-2015 World Cup

Cuban boxing is going for “three titles” and regaining the throne by countries in the XVIII World Championship in October in Qatar, after a decade without being able to reign in those competitions, said its head coach, Rolando Acebal on Monday.
“We have a purpose of three gold medals” and “with three titles we must regain first place,” said Acebal quoted by the weekly Trabajadores, and said that the contest, scheduled for October 5 to 15 in Doha, will be “the most fought of the last times ”.
Acebal, who has been at the helm of Cuban boxing for six years, considered those from Azerbaijan, Russia and Kazakhstan as “more powerful” teams, and warned that currently the difference between boxers and quality teams “is minimal.”
“You have to forget those times when a country was going to sweep. The level has grown a lot, ”said the coach, highlighting that boxers participating in the World Series (WSB) and Aiba Professional Boxing (APB) will compete in the fight.
“Our fighters show great preparation, especially physical, and they have had extensive confrontation this year. The team has young figures, but its base is made up of experienced players ”from previous World Cups, he said.
Another of the purposes of the island in Qatar will be to obtain “another three” Olympic tickets for Rio-2016, which would raise its qualifiers to eight.
“It will be difficult because the fair will deliver only 23 among all weights, but we trust in the possibilities of Roniel Iglesias (69 kg), Erislandi Savón (91) and Andy Cruz (56)”, this last Pan American champion in Toronto-2015 and who He “just beat” the Olympic monarch Robeysi Ramírez on the island.
The Cuban team is completed by Qatar Yosvany Veitía (52), Lázaro Alvarez (60), Yasnier Toledo (64), Arlen López (75) and Julio César La Cruz (81), all classified for Rio, and Johanys Argilagos (49) and Leinier Peró (+91).
Cuba reigned in the boxing world championships for three decades and won 11 of the 17 editions disputed between 1974 and 2013 with 121 medals (67-30-24), followed by Russia (36-30-36) and the United States (16-9 -17). However, hit by a wave of desertions, it has not been crowned since Mianyang-2005. (AFP)
