The Spanish Joan ‘Nani’ Roma (Mini) won his first Dakar title in the car category this Saturday after a final stage in which he managed to overcome Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel (Mini), who had a slight advantage in the general classification.
INTERThe South African Giniel De Villiers (Toyota) won the last stage, between La Serena and Valparaíso, while ‘Nani’ recovered the 26 seconds that Peterhansel took him and finished with an advantage of 5 minutes and 38 seconds over the Frenchman in the final classification .
According to the organizers, Peterhansel stopped at kilometer 133 of the special to wait for ‘Nani’ and Qatari Nasser Al Attiyah, his Mini teammates, according to the strategy that the German team had taken a couple of days ago to ensure the three drawers of the podium with the Spanish in first place.
The Frenchman was this Saturday thirteenth almost 8 minutes behind the winner of the day and 6 minutes and 4 seconds behind ‘Nani’, fourth, a very wide difference in only 157 kilometers of special that suggests that he took his foot off the accelerator.
Al Attiyah was third, almost an hour behind the winner, after finishing ninth in the final stage.
The controversy over the team orders in Mini revolutionized the last days of the Dakar, with a Peterhansel that surprised this Friday in the penultimate stage by snatching the lead from ‘Nani’.
The Frenchman, however, said he was willing to let ‘Nani’ pass if so ordered by the boss, as it seems to have happened on the last day.
De Villiers finally got the fourth position ahead of the Argentine Orlando Terranova (Mini).
