Darvish deals with Cubs for 126 million

Pitcher Yu Darvish and the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a six-year, $ 126 million contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.
The person spoke on condition of not being identified because an official announcement had not been made. The Athletic first reported on the pact.
The deal was signed less than a week before the Cubs begin training camp. The 31-year-old Japanese right-hander was one of the best free agents available on the market, and his acquisition underpins Chicago’s aspirations for its second World Series crown in three seasons.
Darvish finished last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, whom he helped eliminate the Cubs in the playoffs to reach the World Series. The ace is expected to replace Jake Arrieta, who became a free agent after five seasons with the team, in Chicago’s rotation.
The Cubs made the National League championship series the past three seasons, and in 2016 they won their first World Series title since 1908.
Darvish has been selected four times to the All-Star Game, although he has also had injury problems. He started last season with the Texas Rangers and was traded to the Dodgers in July, ending the year with a 10-12 record with a 3.86 ERA.
The right-hander went 4-3 from Darvish with a 3.44 ERA in nine starts for the Dodgers down the stretch. He handcuffed the Cubs in Game 3 of the NL Championship Series, striking out seven while covering 6 1/3 innings with one run allowed in a 6-1 victory at Wrigley Field.
But Darvish was beaten in the World Series against Houston, getting just five outs in each of his two starts – including a loss in Game 7 – with versions that he was being pitched.
The deal spells the end of Arrieta’s presence with the Cubs, a successful stint in which he won the Cy Young Award.
But Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks and Jose Quintana repeat from last year’s team, and Tyler Chatwood joined the rotation in December with a $ 38 million, three-year contract.
Previously, the Cubs acquired Chris Gimenez, Darvish’s regular catcher when they met in Texas, to a minor league contract. AP
