The former star forward of Real Madrid and the Croatian national team Davor Suker ceased to be president of the Croatian Football Federation (HNS) on Thursday, a position he held since 2012.
“I am happy to have participated in the greatest successes of Croatian football, as a player and also as president of the HNS,” reacted the 53-year-old former Sevilla striker, at the end of an election that left the only candidate as the new president, the executive director of the federation Marijan Kustic.
Although the reasons for his departure were not announced, the Croatian media hypothesized that Suker paid sufficient attention to the problems Croatian football is facing today, especially at the infrastructure level.
All-time top scorer of the Croatian team (45 goals), Davor Suker led the ‘Cuadriculada’ to the semifinals of the 1998 World Cup, which ended as the top scorer with 6 goals.
Under his presidency, Croatia reached the final of the 2018 World Cup, lost to France. In the recent European Championship, they lost to Spain in the round of 16. (AFP)
