Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer said goodbye in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Masters 1000 when they fell against two leaders of the new generation, the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (7th) and the German Alexander Zverev (6th) respectively.
Tsitsipas, already a finalist last week in the ATP 500 in Beijing, will play Russian Daniil Medvedev (4th) on Saturday for a place in the final, while Zverev awaits Italian Matteo Berrettini (13th), who beat 7-6 ( 10/8), 6-4 to Austrian Dominic Thiem (5th).
The Greek came back to Djokovic to win 3-6, 7-5 and 6-3. After losing the first set, the 21-year-old was more aggressive in the second, while doubts crept into the Serbian champion and made more and more mistakes, which cost him the match.
With his triumph, Tsitsipas becomes the sixth player classified for the London Masters, which brings together the eight best tennis players of the year, after Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Medvedev and Thiem.
Later Zverev, who is looking for his place in the Masters, endured the pressure and took the victory against a Federer much more nervous than usual; 6-3, 6-7 (7/9) and 6-3.
The Shanghai tournament, the penultimate of the Masters 1000 category on the ATP calendar, is played on hard surfaces and distributes $ 7,473,620 in prizes.
