Djokovic and Simone Biles win Laureus Awards for best athletes of the year

Serbian tennis player Nova Djokovic and American gymnast Simone Biles received the Laureus Awards for the best athletes of 2018, in a ceremony held this Monday in Monaco.

In Djokovic’s case, it is the fourth time he has received this award and equals the record of the Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt.

After returning to the slopes after an elbow injury, Djokovic was able to win, among other titles, Wimbledon and US Open and regain the world number one.

“Winning a Laureus Award is what every athlete wants and it is a great honor for me. Being surrounded by great athletes tonight (…) gives a special meaning to this award ”, declared the Serbian, who won the votes against French footballer Kylian Mbappé, Kenyan athlete Eliud Kipchoge and American basketball player LeBron James.

In the female category, the award went to Biles, who at the Gymnastics World Cup won four gold, one silver and one bronze medals and, at age 21, became the first gymnast to win four world titles in the individual general contest. He also holds the record for world titles, with 14 in the different disciplines.

Biles, who had already won the Laureus in 2017, outvoted tennis players Simona Halep and Angelique Karber, skiers Ester Ledecka and Mikaela Shiffrin and Swiss triathlete Daniela Ryf.

In the rest of the categories, the winners were the following: the French soccer team for the best team, the Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka for the biggest revelation of the year, the American golfer Tiger Woods for the best comeback, the American skier Chloe Kim for the best action athlete and Slovak skier Henrieta Farkasova for best Paralympic athlete.

The Laureus also honored French coach Arsene Wenger for his entire career, Kipchoge for the greatest achievement of the year (the marathon record), North American skier Lindsey Vonn el Laureus for the Spirit of Sport and the YUWA Organization, which works to improve through football the conditions of girls in the rural region of Jharkhand (North India) the Laureus Sport for Good.
