Dodgers complete signing of Dominican star Albert Pujols

The Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday completed the signing of Dominican star Albert Pujols, the future Hall of Famer who joins the baseball World Series champions on a one-year contract after his departure from the Angels.

The 41-year-old slugger who leads the ranking among active players in home runs, RBIs, runs scored bolsters a Dodgers lineup that has been beset by a string of injuries this season.

The fifth-highest home runner in Major League history with 667 and 3,253 hits is likely to debut in a uniform during the Dodgers’ home series against Arizona, which begins Monday.

Pujols was fired by the Angels on May 6 in a move that took the majors by surprise.

«First I would like to thank God for the opportunity he has given me to play this sport. While this is not how I thought my time in Anaheim would end, I am truly grateful for the memories and friendships created in the last 10 years, “said Pujols in a message posted on his social media accounts.

“Thank you to my teammates and Angels fans everywhere for your support. They will always hold a special place in my heart. While everyone in the major leagues wants to compete every day, I understand that roles change and that is something that I have accepted for the past few years, “added Pujols.

The star from Quisquey gives the Dodgers another option at first base, where the Los Angeles ninth has been rocked by injuries to key personnel this season, including last season’s MVP Cody Bellinger and Edwin Rios.

Outfielder AJ Pollock also succumbed to injury, while shortstop and previous World Series MVP Corey Seager suffered a broken hand on Saturday after being hit by a pitch in a win over the Miami Marlins.

Pujols was considered one of the most reliable hitters in baseball for a decade with the St. Louis Cardinals, where his batting average was above .300 in 10 of his 11 seasons with the club.

However, his average fell below .300 throughout his career with the Angels, who signed him to a 10-year, $ 253 million contract in 2011.

This season, Pujols has averaged just .198 for the Angels in 92 plate appearances in 24 games.

Pujols has a historical average of .298, is 13th in hits with 3,253, has been MVP twice in the National League, twice champion of the World Series with the Cardinals (2006 and 2011) and selected 10 times for the Game of Stars AFP (HN)
