The Dodgers have announced the signing of left-hander Jake McGee. The player is signing directly onto the 40-man roster and will presumably have a spot on the active roster to open the season.
Injured right-hander Jimmy Nelson has been placed on the 45-day disabled list, thus releasing a spot on the list. Nelson will miss the entire season after undergoing back surgery, as anticipated for several weeks.
McGee was released by the division rival Rockies even as he prepared for the final guaranteed season of his contract. The Colorado organization will remain on the hook for the prorated portion of his salary of $ 9MM, minus a prorated portion of the league minimum for any time spent on the Dodgers’ active roster.
It certainly pains Rox to see McGee thrive in Los Angeles, but the southpaw will need to figure things out for that to happen. Soon to be 34, McGee is coming off a messy 2019 campaign in which he was likely lucky to have a 4.35 ERA despite allowing 2.4 home runs per nine innings.
McGee’s swing rate fell to 8.6% as he continued to deliver fastball speed to the hands of time. It will be interesting to see what the Dodgers have in mind to extend McGee’s career, now that he no longer has the elite speed he once had. Last year he increasingly turned to his slider with some success, but still went to his trusty heater in four out of five installments. (GG) (Taken from MLB Rumors)
