Dominican outfielder Teóscar Hernández, of the Toronto Blue Jays, and rookie pitcher Tyler Gilbert, of the Arizona D’Backs, were named Major League Baseball Players of the Week on Monday.
For the American League, in a stretch of seven games, Hernández led all players in batting average (.500), hits (14) and total bases hit with his hits (25). On the season, the Dominican has 81 RBIs.
His best performance was in the Blue Jays’ beating of the Angels last Wednesday, when he hit a Grand Slam to break a tie in the fifth inning.
Hernández has been a big step lately, hitting .431 during the month of August and .355 since the All-Star break, held on July 13 in Denver, Colorado.
In the National League rookie Gilbert had a no-hitter game against the San Diego Padres on Saturday at Phoenix, becoming the fourth pitcher in history to throw a no-hitter in his first major league start. .
In that game, Gilbert walked three and struck out five batters in his nine innings. For Gilbert, it’s his first Player of the Week award. AFP (HN)
