Dominican Republic Releases Film About Boxing

The Dominican film “Sambá” will be screened at the next edition of the Tribeca Film Festival, which will take place in New York from April 19 to 30 and which for the first time will host a locally made film, its producers reported today.
“Sambá” is a sports drama about redemption through the metaphor of life and boxing, produced by the Italian Ettore D’Alessandro and the Dominican Carolina Encarnación and directed by the Dominican Laura Amelia Guzmán and the Mexican Israel Cárdenas.
The film’s world premiere will be in the “International Narrative Competition” section of the Tribeca Film Festival, an achievement for Dominican cinema, according to its producers.
Through a statement, the general director of the General Directorate of Cinema (Dgcine), Yvette Marichal, highlighted the fact that for the first time a Dominican film enters the Tribeca Festival, and assured that 2017 «is becoming the year of the internationalization of Dominican cinema ».
“Our films are beginning to compete in the great festivals of the world,” said Marichal, who expressed his “most sincere congratulations” to the production of “Sambá.”
The Tribeca Film Festival was created in 2002 by film producer Jane Rosenthal and actor Robert De Niro, and has become “one of the most prominent festivals in the world,” Dgcine said in the statement.
The premiere of “Sambá” in theaters in the Dominican Republic is scheduled to begin next July.
This film was the winner of the annual public contest of the Fund for Cinematographic Promotion (Fonprocine), promoted by Dgcine.
