Don King wants gender equality in boxing

The American promoter Don King affirmed that women should have the same rank and reduce the salary gap with men, during the first convention of boxing feminine inaugurated today in Playa del Carmen, Mexican Caribbean.

«We must give equality to women in boxing, they must obtain the same rank ”, declared King to the press during his attendance to this meeting that has been summoned by the World Council of Boxing(WBC) to review the female universe in this sport.

King, considered one of the promoters of boxing most important in the world, said that he is in favor of this equality and also that the difference in the income of female fighters with respect to their male colleagues is reduced.

The convention brought together some thirty active and retired boxers, including several who won world titles from various organizations, with promoters, directors of various regulatory organizations of this sport and officials.

Mexican Jackie Nava, who received her WBC super bantamweight champion belt in this match, declared that boxers want higher wages per combat since they have commitments and are also mothers.

“We all want to win more because several of us are mothers,” said Nava, who, in addition to the title, received recognition for her fight against Mexican Ana María Torres.

The first day of activities was marked by formal acts with the presence of the governor of the state of Quintana Roo, Roberto Borge and the mayor of the municipality of Solidaridad, Playa del Carmen, Mauricio Góngora.

The head of the WBC, Mauricio Sulaimán, led the opening of the meeting, which reached its most emotional moment when the late president of the organization José Sulaimán was remembered with a tribute video.
