Federer confirms that he will play the tournament in Rome

The Swiss Roger Federer, number three in the world, confirmed that he will play the Masters 1000 in Rome, which begins on Sunday, after finishing his journey in the Madrid tournament on Friday when he fell to Austrian Dominic Thiem in the quarterfinals.

“Hello everyone, I just spoke with my team and I am happy to announce that I will be playing in Rome again,” Federer said in a video posted on his Instagram account.

“I’m impatient, very excited, it’s been a long time (without playing there),” added the Swiss with a smile.

Federer played his last game in Rome on May 12, 2016 when he lost in the round of 16 to precisely his executioner on Friday in Madrid, the Austrian Thiem.

This defeat also marked his three-year period without playing on clay, a surface to which he now returned in Madrid and will continue in Rome, before facing his main challenge at Roland Garros, a tournament he has not played since 2015.

Federer fell to Thiem in the quarterfinals of the Madrid tournament on Friday, after winning his first two games against Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils.

The draw for the Italian tournament, held on Friday afternoon, gave him a start against the winner of the first round match between young American Frances Tiafoe (37th) and Portuguese Joao Sousa (75th). AFP
