Swiss tennis player Roger Federer was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel, his hometown, a recognition that he considered as important as winning a Grand Slam title.
“Thank you very very much. It’s a huge honor, ”the 36-year-old legend said in a German video message released today by the university.
“When I started playing, it was never my goal to receive this distinction from the University of Basel. But I am very happy, as if I had won a Grand Slam, “said the Swiss, who regretted not being able to attend the ceremony in person.
Federer was honored by the Faculty of Medicine, which highlighted his contribution “to the reputation of Basel and Switzerland internationally”, his sporting chivalry and his foundation’s commitment to children in Africa.
Likewise, the university authorities highlighted Federer “the example he provides as an athlete so that many people engage in physical activity and have a healthier life.”
In total, seven people – five men and two women – were honored by the University of Basel. In addition to Federer, the musician Andrew Bond and the president of the Swiss National Bank, Thomas Jordan, were recognized.
