Federer goes to quarterfinals in Basel

The Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas (45th in the world) was eliminated by the Swiss Stan Wawrinka (17th) by 6-3 and 6-4, in the first round of the Basel men’s tennis tournament, where the Swiss favorite Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals.

Federer, world number 3 and winner of nine times in the tournament in his hometown, beat Moldovan Radu Albot (49th) in a second round match 6-0, 6-3, in just 63 minutes.

It is the seventeenth time in nineteen appearances that Federer will play the quarterfinals in ‘his’ Basel tournament.

In that quarterfinal duel he will face the winner of the second round clash between Wawrinka and American Francis Tiafoe (48th) on Friday.

For his part, the Spanish Pablo Andújar (60th) was eliminated after losing in the first round by a double 6-1 against the Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis (70th).

The tournament in the Swiss city of Basel is held on a hard surface and distributes more than two million euros in prizes.
