Federer opens with victory in Madrid on his return to clay

The Swiss Roger Federer made his debut with victory in the Madrid tournament, on his return to the competition on clay, beating the Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-2, 6-3 with authority.

The number three in the world only needed 52 minutes to get rid of the French and do a lap in style on clay, on which he had not competed since 2016.

Federer, winner in Madrid in 2006 (when it was played on hard court), 2009 and 2012 (already on clay) did not give Gasquet any option supported by a solid serve.

“Tonight has been very special for me,” Federer told the crowd on the court after the match.

“I was a little nervous before the game, but it is normal and then I played a good match,” he added.

The Swiss started the first set in a whirlwind, getting 3-0 up in a heat in which he achieved up to five direct services.

Dominated by his rival, Gasquet, who was returning to the circuit after a six-month absence and an inguinal hernia operation, he was unable to overcome that advantage and to withstand Federer’s attacks.

The second set was more even, until with 4-3 on the scoreboard, Federer broke his rival’s serve to get 5-3 and then close the set and the match with his serve.
