Federer says goodbye to Cincinnati early

The Swiss Roger Federer, third in the world ranking, said goodbye early to the Cincinatti Masters 1000 when he fell in the round of 16 against the young Russian Andrey Rublev, 70 of the ATP, like the Argentine Diego Schwartzman.

Rublev submitted seven-time tournament champion Federer 6-3, 6-4 and in the quarterfinals he will face his compatriot Daniil Medvedev.

The 38-year-old Federer will play at the US Open later this month after having played just two matches on hard courts.

Cincinnati was the Swiss’s first tournament since losing the Wimbledon final last July to Novak Djokovic, who has a clear path to lift the trophy in that Ohio city.

Rublev, 21, took less than an hour to earn his second win against one of the top five in a month after beating Dominic Thiem in Hamburg.
