Federer: “Whatever they say, Nadal is the favorite for Roland Garros”

The Swiss Roger Federer, second seeded, said that it is normal for the best tennis players in the world to face confidence problems and assured that the Spanish Rafael Nadal, seventh in the world, is the favorite to win Roland Garros.

«It seems that (Nadal) is doing well and whatever they say, he is the favorite for Roland Garros. He has not lost it in ten years, “said the Swiss about the man from Manacor -with whom he will challenge himself if Nadal beats the Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka this Friday-, at a press conference.

Asked about this likely matchup and about Nadal, Federer opined that the Mallorcan might “not be too well” physically, but downplayed his confidence issues.

“I know what it’s like to feel safe and insecure,” said the Swiss, before adding that “it’s normal in a fifteen-year career.”

“You would be shocked to hear that sometimes (the best tennis players in the world) we doubt ourselves and anyone who says otherwise is lying,” he said.

Federer won this day by a double 6-3 to the number six, the Czech Tomas Berdych, and will play in the semifinals with the winner of the match that closes the day this Friday between Nadal and Wawrinka.

Federer, 33, is looking for his first victory in this Roman tournament, in which he competes for the fifteenth time and in which he has lost three finals, all of them against Spaniards (in 2003 against Félix Mantilla, in 2006 and 2013 against Nadal) .
