Ferrari threatens to leave F1

The president of Ferrari, Sergio Marchionne, said that the Italian team could leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2020 season, if the new owner of the category, the American group Liberty Media, does not modify its projects.

“If we change the concept to the point where it is no longer recognizable, we will not be able to continue,” he said Thursday in a conference call to present the results.

Defacing Formula 1 for commercial reasons is a discourse that Ferrari dislikes
“We want to reduce costs, they have gone beyond the limit of what is possible,” added Marchionne, who is also the managing director of the Fiat group.

F1 president Chase Carey has insisted that he wants to make every race a big American-style show, “a little Superbowl”, and aims to increase the tests to 25 per season, instead of the current 20 .

Present in Austin two weeks ago for the United States Grand Prix, Marchionne also expressed his doubts about Ross Brawn, a former Ferrari technical director between 1997 and 2006, who has become Formula 1 sports director since this season.

“The most important thing, which I have also repeated to Ross Brawn, who has a long history in Formula 1 and also in Ferrari, is that defacing Formula 1 for commercial reasons is a speech that Ferrari does not like”, he stressed.

“You have to pay close attention and not remove the DNA of this discipline, its history, which is what counts for Ferrari,” he added. “If this goes away, Ferrari’s interest in staying on the circuit is going to wane,” concluded Marchionne. (Infobae)
