FIFA sanctions Panama again

FIFA sanctioned Panama again, this time for invasion of the field by some fans during the match against the United States, held on October 10 in the qualifying rounds for the 2022 World Cup.

Through a statement, the Panamanian Football Federation (Fepafut) reported on Thursday that it was notified by FIFA of the decision made by its disciplinary commission to sanction it with 20,000 Swiss francs (about $ 21,800) for inappropriate behavior by a group of fans. during the last match played at home.

He added that he will initiate the respective appeal process and insisted on a message of “fair play” on and off the court. He also reiterated a call for reflection to local fans to take into account that “these attitudes ultimately harm the national team in their desire to qualify in 2022.”

It is the second sanction that FIFA applies to Panama in a matter of days. Last week, the governing body of world football informed Fepafut that it will have to play the next World Cup qualifying match without an audience, due to a sanction for homophobic expressions chanted by fans during the September matches.

That punishment also included the payment of 50,000 Swiss francs (about $ 54,000).

In that case, the homophobic insult was heard during the game on September 2, in which Panama received Costa Rica, and six days later, in a match against Mexico. In the middle of this year, FIFA had sanctioned Mexico for the same reason, which had to play its first match of the tie, on September 2, without fans, against Jamaica. (AP)
