In May 2006, his name appeared in this case, a blood doping network allegedly organized around the Spanish doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

The German cyclist was excluded from the Tour de France the day before the start, and announced his retirement in February 2007.

A year later, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) sanctioned him for doping and all the results obtained after May 2005 were annulled.
