Former Lakers player Kareem Abdul-Jabbar suffered from prostate cancer

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar revealed that he suffered from prostate cancer, through an article he wrote for a magazine about the health risks faced by black people.

Abdul-Jabbar, the leading scorer in NBA history, did not elaborate on the disease in the article he wrote for WebMD that was published Wednesday. His publicist indicated that it is the first time that the retired star has spoken publicly about his experience with prostate cancer.

Abdul-Jabbar, 73, was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia in 2008.

In the article titled “Black Lives Matter,” Abdul-Jabbar refers to the fact that black people are at higher risk for heart problems and cancer, and indicated that he also underwent coronary bypass surgery.

He acknowledged that he was able to receive better health care than many black people, partly because he is a celebrity and also because his two sons work in the health care field. (GG) (AP)
