A Formula E car, the electric category of the International Automobile Federation, was mounted today on a barge on Lake Xochimilco to promote the March 12 race in the Mexican capital.
Xochimilco, which keeps the last vestiges of the ancient lake that was Mexico City, received the vehicle as a “witness to the commitment” to the use of sustainable energy in cities like Mexico, the circuit said in a press release.
The competition vehicle was mounted on a trajinera, a traditional name for lake boats driven by a driver with a wooden pole, in some of the water channels in the area, in the southeast of the Mexican capital.
The presentation in Xochimilco was attended by the sports director of the Mexican capital, Horacio de la Vega, and the co-founder and general director of Formula E, Alberto Longo, said the governing body of the electric car award.
“With Formula E we are looking for a platform for the improvement of technologies and that at some point all the cars in the world are electric,” Longo confessed.
De la Vega pointed out that the arrival of Formula E in Mexico City combines public policies for caring for the environment and sports.
In the Mexican capital, which has 20 million inhabitants and six million gasoline cars, there are only 200 electric vehicles, according to data from the Federal Electricity Commission.
Mexico City will host the fifth e-Prix of the season on March 12 after those held in China, Malaysia, Uruguay and Argentina.
