The Spanish tennis player Garbiñe Muguruza, number 7 in the world, has decided to withdraw from the tournament in San José (California, USA), of which she was the first seed, due to some discomfort in her right arm.
The Spanish was to make her debut in the tournament this Wednesday directly in the round of 16 against the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, who will now face the Russian Anna Blinkova, from the previous phase.
“I have been feeling pain in my right arm for a couple of days and I have realized that I am not ready to play the game, so I hope I can recover for the next tournaments,” says Muguruza in a statement.
“This is a tournament where I always play at the beginning of the US Open Series, so I hope to see all my fans again next year,” he adds.
San José was to be Muguruza’s first engagement since losing in the second round of her title defense at Wimbledon to Belgian Alison van Uytvanck.
The world number 7 was a semifinalist in this tournament last year, then played at Stanford University, where she lost to eventual champion Madison Keys.
Garbiñe Muguruza plans to play the Montreal, Cincinnati and New York tournaments. EFE
