Garbiñe Muguruza out due to injury in San José

The Spanish Garbiñe Muguruza will not play the tournament in San José (California), which starts next Monday, due to an injury that drags her right leg.

Muguruza, who has not returned to the competition since she was eliminated in the first round of the Wimbledon tournament by the Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia, on July 2, has been dragging some discomfort in her leg for months that has not yet been recovered.

“I am very disappointed to have to withdraw from San José. Unfortunately my leg is not ready to compete and I am doing everything I can to get back on the court and be healthy. I wish the tournament a great week, “explained the Spanish player.

Garbiñe Muguruza, who broke with her coach Sam Sumyk after his elimination from Wimbledon and who has yet to announce a new manager, is currently ranked 27th in the women’s rankings. So far this year, the Spanish, winner of Wimbledon in 2017 and Roland Garros in 2016, only triumphed in the Monterrey tournament.

The Spanish tennis player is now targeting the Toronto and Cicinnati tournaments and then the United States Open, the last Grand Slam of the year.

“It is certainly disappointing that Garbiñe had to withdraw from the event, but unfortunately injuries are a part of sports and a player’s health is always the top priority,” said San Jose tournament director Vickie Gunnarsson. “Hopefully, she can recover quickly and get back on the court soon,” he added.
