Haaland places Dortmund as provisional leader

Borussia Dortmund defeated Mainz 3-1, with a goal from Marco Reus and two from Erling Haaland, one of them from a penalty, which has become the provisional leader of the Bundesliga, waiting for what happens this Sunday in the duel between Bayer Leverkusen and Bayern Munich.

The other team that could have reached the top of the standings today, Freiburg, drew one goal against Leipzig and remains in fourth position, although without losing.

Union Berlin are now fifth after beating Wolfsburg 2-0.

Dortmund had almost absolute control of the game in the first half. Marco Rose’s men monopolized possession of the ball, did not allow Mainz to knit counterattacks and went ahead early, in the 3rd minute, with a great goal from Marco Reus.

The play began with a combination between Julian Brandt and Thomas Meunier down the right wing. The center of Meunier, who was looking for Erling Haaland, rebounded at the feet of Reus who scored with a left-footed shot to the square.

Later, Dortmund continued to command and the only thing that could be missed was that they did not have more arrival against Mainz whose priority was to defend themselves.

There was a deflected shot from Meunier in the 21st minute and another from Brandt in the 31st, both from a good position and, at the end of the first half, an excellent double chance by Haaland that first saved goalkeeper Robin Zentner and then Niakhaté on the goal line.

Already in the second half, in the 54th minute, Haaland scored the second for Dortmund by converting a penalty for one hand inside the area detected by the VAR.

The goal came just when Mainz had begun to show a clear improvement with their forward lines and had begun to appear threatening in their counterattacks.

In 62 Onisiwo had an excellent chance with a Vaseline that went over the goal when goalkeeper Gregor Kobel was already beaten. In 64 Mats Hummels responded with a header to the post that would have been the sentence. Then in 76 Kobel had to stop a shot from Boethius with his fists.
