Half of the guests at the boxing convention in P.Rico cancel due to fear of Zika

San Juan (EFEUSA) .- The president of the World Boxing Organization (WBO), Puerto Rican Francisco Valcárcel, said today that “about half” of the 500 visitors who planned to come to Puerto Rico in October to participate in the organism’s annual convention, have canceled their travel in fear of the Zika virus.
Valcárcel made this statement in an interview with Univision Radio, in which he partly blamed the governor, Alejandro García Padilla, for the communication strategy that is being carried out abroad.
“The image of the humanitarian crisis, that there is no money to pay nurses, that which the governor has sold with his ‘little mouth’ to eat has been repeated to me even in Japan, that I have just arrived from there,” said Valcárcel.
The XXIX Annual Convention of the OMB will take place between October 17 and 21 in San Juan.
The appointment will include workshops and training seminars for all officials of the organization, including judges, referees, doctors and supervisors, “in recognition that their quality and preparation directly affects the outcome of the matches,” according to the OMB. in a statement last March.
During the event, the world classifications of boxers, appeals and reviews of bouts, as well as events related to the application of laws and regulations designed to protect boxers and strengthen the sport will be discussed.
The convention will feature the presence and participation of current and former WBO world champions, promises and promoters, among others.
The event, which will be held at the Caribe Hilton Hotel, will start on the 17th with a golf tournament between WBO champions, among other events. EFEUSA
