Immigration detains widow and son of Muhammed Ali
Muhammad Ali’s son, named after the great boxer, was detained by immigration officials at a Florida airport and questioned about his ancestry and religion, a family friend said Saturday.
It added that the facts amounted to an unconstitutional profile and indicated that upon returning from an event for Black History Month in Jamaica, Muhammad Ali Jr. and his mother, Khalilah Camacho Ali, were separated and separated on February 7 at the post of immigration control at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
The facts were released by Chris Mancini, a friend and lawyer of the family.
The lawyer indicated that the woman was released shortly after when she showed a photo of herself with her ex-husband, the former champion of boxing heavyweight.
He added that 44-year-old Ali Jr. was not as lucky because he did not carry a photo of his father.
The boxer’s son confirmed his Muslim faith and was detained for about two hours, despite telling officials that he is a US-born US citizen, according to Mancini.
He added that this time was the first time Ali and his mother had been asked if they were Muslim when entering the United States, he said.
The lawyer said that the way things happened, everything indicates that the two “fell into a profiling program run by customs, designed to obtain information from any Muslim person.”
He was specific in stating that “what caused his arrest was his Arabic name and religion.”
Mancini said Ali Jr. and his mother linked their treatment to President Donald Trump’s effort to restrict the immigration of Muslims to the United States.
According to the attorney, Camacho Ali and Ali Jr. are considering filing a federal lawsuit. EFE
