The World Boxing Council incorporated into the green belt that gives the champions of all its divisions the images of the former welterweight and middleweight champion Walker Smith Jr. better known as ‘Sugar Ray Robinson’ and of the late president of the entity, the Mexican José Sulaimán.
As an amateur boxer, Sugar Ray Robinson, who died on April 12, 1989, reached a record of 85 wins without losses, 69 knockouts and 40 resolved in the first round.
The first WBC belt with the new images incorporated will be awarded to the winner of the middleweight title to be contested on June 7 by Argentine champion Sergio ‘Maravilla’ Martínez and Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.
The first belt of the WBC will carry on its sides the images of Mohamed Ali, Joe Luis, Sugar Ray Robinson and Sulaimán, who died on January 16. But it will also have the photos of the protagonists of the combat: Martínez and Cotto, adds the official version.
Sugar Ray Robinson, promoted to the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1990, was selected to be in the green belt for being the “most iconic champion” of the middleweight, the body pointed out. EFE
